Play in the Foundation Stage

23rd Sep 2025

Our younger boys and girls have settled into school life. They are enjoying getting to know each other, building friendships and exploring all that the classroom has to offer. It has been lovely to see them grow in confidence as they find their place in our school community.

At our school, we place a strong emphasis on learning through play. Play is not only fun, it is one of the most powerful ways children develop socially, emotionally and academically. Through play, children can explore the world around them, experiment with new ideas and develop important skills such as problem solving, communication and cooperation.

We are very fortunate to have such a fantastic outdoor area, which allows children to use their creativity and imagination in open ended ways. Whether building, role playing or creating, the outdoors provides endless learning opportunities for the children.

So far, the children have taken part in a variety of exciting activities. They have created self-portraits by carefully looking in mirrors and matching colours to their skin tones, experimented with colour mixing to make their own unique shades and enjoyed mark making with different tools and materials. Role play has been another favourite, where the children use their imaginations to create stories and work together in groups. Our P2 children have been helping to bring this play to life by using their developing writing skills. They have created signs, menus and plans that add real purpose to their play and inspire others to join in.

With a mix of ages in the class, play provides rich opportunities for peer learning. Younger children benefit from observing and joining in with the older children, while the older children gain confidence and leadership skills by guiding and supporting their peers.

Thank you for stopping by. We look forward to sharing more of our learning journey with you throughout the year!
