KS2 classes enjoyed a very interesting workshop learning about the historical teaching pioneer Tom Dunn, delivered by our local environmentalist Liz Farnan.
The workshop, conducted in the outdoor classroom and forest, introduced the children to what a hedge school was and briefly to the life of Tom Dunn, who was born 1736 and bravely educated Presbyterian and Catholic children together. Pupils got involved with measuring trees and calculating their age using slate boards and chalk, foraging for morning break (blackberries) and earning about nature through a story about the Greek heroes.
They also composed their own poetry inspired by the sounds of the forest.
